She has a twin sister, Taryn, and an older sister named Vivienne, who is a Faerie. Cardan is Jude’s bully/enemy and the main protagonist, unlike most cruel protagonists, he struggles to understand his emotions and tries to keep up a mask to his true emotions by displaying sneers and sarcastic remarks.
Holly Black has a unique writing style. She describes the fine details of the weapons, the clothing, the food and, most importantly, the Faerie world. The rules of Elfhame and the description made this fantasy book more realistic- not like the world was made up for the sake of writing a story about faeries.
