I think the characters are personable and well written
It is a engaging book about the power dynamics in a family, in a culture, where power is everything and it doesn't automatically go to someone (i.e., the oldest child/son or fate decides) instead their is a choice to be made and seeing how the children react to this and squabble and have their silly little power plays instead of, in some cases, an actual relationship.
The story follows Jude, a human whose eldest sisters, half sister is the half-fey daughter of the king, and as such is potentially in line for the throne, in a place where humans are generally disliked, hated by some, and almost always thought of as second class citizens.
We follow her as she joins a plight to help others than the favourite succeed whilst battling her inner feelings and desires for the most annoying of the potential rulers possible, Cardan (who sounds way to much like cardigan for me to take seriously).
However i suspect i found myself a little detached from the serious as i slightly outage the intended demographic, but still a great book.
