It stared off a little slow, what hooked me was the part where a strange man showed up at the kids doorstep killed the parents and took off and then you find the kids actually love him despite what they did. I find this interesting because even though a lot of books start like this and show how they're whipped away into a magical and fairy tale world where nothing bad can happen to them, this does the opposite. Where one gets severely bullied, the other wants nothing to do with this new world and just wants to disappear, and the youngest (I think) is the shy one who does what they're told (not usual for the youngest).

I love how you slowly get to hate Cardan but also feel bad for him when revelations of his past come up and you can actually seek the pain and sorrow along with Jude and how she seeks to gets revenge and overcome it.

My favourite was the plot twists and how Jude and Carden always seemed to be turning on one another but through the different books you just see how they actually work together and how Cardan may not be as bad as he seems. Which brings us to character development which is amazing for both Carden and Jude and even the rest of the spies.
