I waited forever for The Cruel Prince. Holly Black is a master at world building, and the confines of this world will be familiar to any fan of hers— some favourite faces also appear!— but slipping into these forests and onto these paths is easy and thrilling with Black’s evocative writing.

The story grips you from the off: murders, kidnapping, deception, hearts broken and love off kilter. And that’s before you even enter the fairy kingdom.

It’s hard not to give things away, but I will say that the protagonist, Jude, is one of three sisters who enter this world as children, after growing up in our world. But Jude and her twin are mortal, so when you see them again as teenagers, they are wrestling with what it means to be so different in such a magical and brutal world.

I read the book in a day. The plot is fast paced and intense. But, I did struggle with the way it ended— until I read online that it was the first of a new trilogy. Argh! Now I have to wait another year! Good thing Holly Black’s books are worth it...
