This book is a brilliant mix of magic, politics and the real world. Not to mention, the amazingly level-headed heroine Jude. Where this doesn't mention a lot about the world that surrounds us, it explains more about the things around us that we don't notice within nature. It describes problems that we may face in our own lives with an even more extreme plot and a wonderful setting.
Jude doesn't have a lot of development in this book in my opinion, her mindset has been to win and conquer throughout the whole book. One thing i found very interesting though, is how she as a hero, prioritises power over everything at the start and slowly realises that power isn't the only thing that she wants.
The love interests in this book is not thoroughly explored as the main character is just getting to know Cardan who is the main love interest. I think that saving this for the later books is an ingenious idea as it leaves lots of room for what is to come.
The reason that there is one star missing in my review is that the politics aspect of this book was a little hard to follow, the explanations are slowly being revealed in very vague manners and i, as a reader, relied on the blunt explanations by the characters to explain to me what was happening. This ruined the excitement of watching the plot unravel with the character.
