I don't normally like or read purple prose, but Holly Black makes it irresistible. The silvery lushness of the writing only heightens the terror and uncertainty of the world Jude lives in. Supported by a cast of characters who are as untrustworthy as they are memorable, it's hard not root for Jude, who is the fighter we all want our heroines to be.
The book can almost be difficult to read at times - fae really are cruel and capricious, and the only thing more fragile than the humans is trust. It can be an almost stressful experience, thanks to the constant underlying tension of the plot. But that's what makes it riveting, too. I also live for the author coming up with new and fantastical costumes - I fear she's ruined me for good in that regard.
Highly recommended if you like fantasy, fae and intrigue of the highest order. Definitely read the sequels, too.
