It begins with… an enticing prologue which intrigues the reader and leaves them desperate to know what happens in the years to come.

My review: I really enjoyed the world Holly Black creates; Faerie exists alongside our modern society, which meshes reality with our ideas of fantasy.

Black’s characters are both intriguing and complex, Prince Cardan doesn’t conform to our ideas of Faerie princes and our narrator, Jude, offers a fresh perspective. She is a strong, wilful female lead who is still vulnerable despite her headstrong nature.

Within her book, Black explores dark and diverse themes which include identity, race and bullying abuse. Through her use of imagery and carefully structured dialogue we’re able to watch the events unfold in an enjoyable and surprising way.
