Jude’s parents were killed by Madoc when she was still a child, because her mother has a child with him. Her sister Vivi. With her and her twin Taryn, the general dragged her to the elves' home. The rest of his family, Oryana, Madoc’s wife, and Oak, her son, live there.
Jude is not treated well as a human being in the Elfenheim and therefore decides to stop them at the beginning of the book. Above all, Cardan seems to hate her abyss. They’re having a fierce exchange of blows. As Jude, she decides to become a knight for her dream, (Madoc teaches her martial arts), and to fight she gets to crown prince Dain, Cardan’s big brother. She makes several shady deals and has to deal with the consequences soon enough.

I’ve heard a lot about Holly Black’s books and had high expectations for the book. Unfortunately, I was sometimes extremely disappointed. I only started reading the books, because the fairy tales of Sarah J Maas appeal to me. I thought they were so similar and partly I was right. The book was really tough and tedious to read up to the 20th chapter. In my opinion, the characters have often fallen out of their character and made decisions that I couldn’t understand. Jude seems to have an endless pyre for life and sometimes it seemed just too exaggerated for me. I have often toyed with the idea of stopping reading, but since I have never done that before and the book must have somehow reached its hype, I continued reading. That was a good idea, because from chapter 20 onwards, the story got better and better. There were many unexpected plot twists and the story took shape so slowly.
I was able to understand the characters' and their motives better. In addition, I really liked that Jude started to fight for change. It not only moves forward by force, but also “adapt” to the elf kingdom and attacks tougher measures. It’s nice to be able to watch this character development. I’m curious how it goes on and look forward to reading the second book. So despite the disappointment at the beginning I will read the rest of the volumes and hope that they will begin with an exciting start.
I recommend the book to elf lovers who have already liked other books of this kind and to anyone who loves a badass female fighter as protagonist.
