The mystery starts with a modern day mudlark, a scavenger, a treasure seeker maybe even an amateur archaeologist on the banks of the Thames. A trade which has carried on since the 18th century and still draws people to this day. But this mudlark finds something totally unexpected - part of a human hand. This book is one of a series by Jane Casey featuring DS Maeve Kerrigan however, though I would usually find this distracting as I would be concerned about not knowing the full back story, this book immediately brought me up to speed in a concise manner so that I felt comfortable with the lead character. DS Kerrigan is quickly wrong-footed when her long-term partner (and landlord) is moved onto another case but with a large slice of good luck (in the form of DNA) she starts her investigation. This is an interesting and intriguing preview.
