This is the best of the series so far. If you haven't met Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan, then it comes highly recommended by me. This absolutely works as a standalone for the plot, but to get the thrill of the relationship developments then I'd absolutely recommended starting at the beginning, or at least book two, when DI Josh Derwent is introduced.
Casey's writing is meticulously planned, and this always provides a great mystery and crime to solve. Her protagonist is Maeve Kerrigan, a young female detective working in the Met's murder investigation team. She is often partnered with DI Josh Derwent, a character who both attracts and repels. I love the dynamics between these two as they investigate.
The Cutting Place is addictive from start to finish, topical, shocking and engrossing. Brilliant from start to finish.
