The Cutting Place is an authentic, character-driven novel with a clever plot and a satisfying ending. Although it is the ninth book in the Maeve Kerrigan series, it works perfectly well as a standalone novel. I hadn't read any of the previous books in the series prior to reading this book and I didn't feel disadvantaged in any way.

The two main characters, DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent, are a dynamic duo and their will-they-or-won't-they relationship make this book an engaging read. The story was realistic and well paced, with believable dialogue, authentic police procedural detail and frequent plot twists that kept me on my toes. The writing flowed effortlessly from chapter to chapter and the characters and scenes were introduced seamlessly throughout.

I would recommend this book to crime fiction fans and I will be looking out for more books by this author.
