Jumping into the 9th book of a series with no previous knowledge, this book was rather well written to introduce the reoccurring cast gently and memorably, but also its larger cast in general with its ever growing suspects.

This book has something for a lot of people, a murder filled with twists and turns, that only lead to more and more complex problems but also some drama filled, but more relatable sub plots, the revelation of a secret child, abusive relationships, and the ongoing romantic tensions between the main character and her co-worker.

The plot is straight forward, a murder happens with very little information, but the plot ramps up fairly quickly albeit with various tangents, including a mention of a cot death, escalating with the main murder investigation as more deaths occur, or are uncovered. No details are missed as everything loops back, a sign of a well written cohesive story with the main plot neatly wrapped enough.

The cover is nice, just nice. Dark and shaded like most books of its genre, which is a strong and correct indication of its contents.

In the initial chapters I found the descriptions of her co-worker a little annoying. He is the exact trope of tall, dark, and handsome, rude to everyone including her but actually secretly nice on the inside. He is that balance of not quite perfect, but effectively the man of most women's dreams with just that right amount of sensitivity and thoughtfulness.

There wasn't anything outstanding to me of this genre, it has the standard tangents and read herrings, building up to dramatic reveals, all the hallmarks of mystery and crime fiction. Overall the writing is enjoyable, and easy to read (I read it in one sitting) and I would read more books from this author, if not to find out the backstory behind the main cast.

I'd recommend it to any true crime lover, but also to the majority of female friends who enjoy a good story and can handle harrowing descriptions of victims.
