The Cutting Place by Jane Casey is fantastic. Everything from the characters, the writing style, the setting and the plot combined to make one of the most original and current stories I've read in a long time. Maeve is a brilliant protagonist, and her relationships with her team, specifically Derwent, had me completely engrossed and wanting more. The relationship dynamics between this team of detectives might be among the best I've ever read. The plot was complex and had a satisfying conclusion that wasn't obvious from the outset.

As a new reader, I was slightly daunted coming into the series at book nine, but my worries soon evaporated. Those coming in with no knowledge of the series can rest easy - this can be read as a stand-alone, and Jane Casey weaves important information from previous installments into the narrative so seamlessly that there was never a point where I felt lost.

This is the best police procedural I've read in a long time, and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series.
