This is the first book I have read by Jane Casey.although it is the ninth to feature DS Maeve Kerrigan. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, I would have preferred to have read the previous novels in the series first as there was obviously some history amongst the detectives, particularly Maeve and Josh, which went over my head.
I wasn’t too keen on the chapters about the current investigation being interspersed with ones about an unknown man and what happened ‘two years earlier’ as I wasn’t sure how they fit in to the plot and this distracted me from the main story,
However, I enjoyed the plot which was clever and well written. The banter and camaraderie between Maeve and the other characters was amusing and very true to life.
I’m not sure this is on a par with Val McDermid and Mark Billingham’s police procedurals which I adore. Perhaps I need to go back and read all the Maeve Kerrigan books in order to really appreciate them.
