A severed hand is found by a mud lark on the Thames. This draws the reader straight into the book wanting to know more. There is history between the detectives adding another level to the story. The main character is a junior female police officer which is becoming quite a cliche in crime writing, but in this case, this does not indicate a sexual relationship with any of her colleagues.
The author has definitely done her homework with this novel and accurately describes less well known areas of London as well as the finds by the mudlark. She successfully balances the level of description with character interaction which adds sufficient colour to the story but allows it to progress at a good speed keeping the readers interest.
