Well Written And Topical

This is a very topical storyline following the MeToo movement which makes it feel like a very plausible story. As well as the main plot of investigating Paige Hargreaves’ murder, there is a subplot about Maeve’s boyfriend and the two dovetail together as they provide different perspectives on abuse. The scenes at the Chiron Club would not seem out of place in recent news reports whilst Maeve’s experience shows that there is no such thing as a stereotypical victim.
Maeve is a good lead character and she doesn’t come with a lot of the baggage that many fictional police do, such as a drink problem or divorces. Her colleagues also have enough individual qualities that make distinct from each other, rather than blurring into each other which is another problem some police procedural have.
The only parts I wasn’t so keen on where the flashbacks scattered throughout the book. I didn’t feel like they added anything to the story and preferred sticking with Maeve’s narrative.
