As I said in the title of this review, it's an easy, well paced book to read. The sections, timelines and chapters are very manageable and perspectives and times change in logical places, this book is equally easy to read in one- go or in short segments, without needing to worry about forgetting a key theme, clue or feature if you set it down for a while.

The crime plot is fine and to the point, with bits that seem irrelevant until you see how it comes together. I like the current crime with insights of a separate past investigation which also takes a while to develop and inter-link. (a mix of obvious and surprising twists in the 2nd half were done well)

All of which is good.

The reason I had to give it 3 stars is that I found the lead characters a bit bland and that in turn made it very hard to engage in the story, It has all the signs of a thriller but lacks a certain quality beneath the surface of the writing.

I enjoyed reading the book and as the story progressed I did find myself drawn in further especially with the very unexpected twist in the middle, along with the more obvious plot routes, but the first half felt a bit flat after such a great opener and I struggled to get going. It's not as good as similar books I've read, good ideas, needing a better execution.

TLDR:

Easy to read, good section lengths, follows usual crime/thriller themes ,
Characters seem a bit shallow, not the most imaginative or gripping writing.
improves as it goes along and there's some nice twists so stick with it if you like this style of writing

This review isn't anywhere as near as succinct as I'd normally like as i'm really not sure about this book, so probably worth giving a go for yourself if you like the genre?
