The Dark Lake is the first novel by Sarah Bailey and centres around the murder of a local teacher who is found in a local lake.
The main protagonist, Gemma Woodstock, is assigned the case despite her having known the victim since childhood so there is an excellent basis for a really good novel.
The book starts slowly and only really picks up the pace later on. This makes the first part of the book seem to drag on a bit
Despite the fact that we are led to believe that everyone knows everyone else there are a couple of things that are key to the plot that we are supposed to believe that nobody knows.
In addition, it was very difficult to connect with the main character which may have been due to the style of writing used whereby there was a lot of jumping about in timeframes and some inclusions of Woodstock's views in the middle of chapters. Woodstock also didn't seem to have many redeeming features.
However there was some promise. The plot was a decent one and it wasn't the worse book that I've read. Hopefully the next book will be an improvement
