What an attention grabbing introduction from Neil White that sets an ominous scene in the northern valley town of Highford with a brutal attack on an unlit towpath as Lizzie Barnsley is murdered. With attacks alongside the canal not without precedent and many still unsolved it appears to be something of a local crime blackspot.

Four months on a jaded defence lawyer Dan Grant prepares to attend to his newly assigned client, Peter Box, who is up on the charge of murder and reluctant to speak even though the evidence against him appears strong.. Forming a defence is therefore left to Dan..

A lesser defence lawyer would take the money and not give a second thought to Peter Box and his eventual fate, but Dan Grant seems to have morals and the wherewithal to look into the previous attacks along the same path. Together with his private investigator help, Jayne, and a woman whom he clearly has some history, can Dan get to the truth? Every bit as fascinating is Peter Box and I cannot wait to see the police getting stuck into questioning him and Dan’s defence.. after all, why would you a man guilty of nothing not pull out every stop to prove his innocence? A refreshingly different premise.

Thriller, courtroom antics and romantic intrigue - sounds like a superb combination.
