This will be the first book I have read by Neil White, and it looks exactly like my sort of book. I really like the cover as it is atmospheric and captures what the book seems to be about. The blurb sells the sort of book that I would normally pick up in this genre, with an intriguing crime at the centre of the story. I was already sold on this book before I got to the first look.

The first look made a fantastic first impression, with the opening chapter giving a creepy, suspenseful and ultimately chilling introduction to this book. I was hooked from pretty much the first page, and love Neil White’s writing style. As the story continues, and we get to see more and more of our main characters in action, I really enjoyed reading about Dan and his personal moral argument about defending a potential killer. I also liked the brief glimpse of the relationship between him and Murdoch. Jayne also seems like a great character and am looking forward to seeing how she and Dan work together.

By the end of the first look, I am definitely hooked and really want to read more. My only concern with this book is the amount of description that will appear later on in the book, however, based on what I have already read I think this will be a new favourite.
