Defense lawyer Dan Grant and his investigator Jayne Brett are called in to defend Peter Box, a man accused of drowning a young woman in the canal. But as they dig deeper into the case they find there is more to the story than there first appeared. Dan and Jayne discover that Peter had tried to confess to a similar murder ten years prior. A murder which saw an innocent man lose years of his life behind bars, although not everyone agrees that he really is innocent. It’s a race against time to find out who the real killer is, before they strike again.

This is the first book by Neil White I have had the pleasure to read and it won’t be the last. The Darkness Around Her is a courtroom drama written by a criminal lawyer and the level of expertise shows. The story is slow in pace, but kept me gripped from start to finish. If you’re a fan of murder mysteries, then this one won’t let you down. There are a few unanswered questions I would like to have seen dealt with, but this didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. The story is realistic enough that it doesn’t seem entirely unbelievable, whilst containing enough twist and drama to keep you reading. I look forward to more adventures in the life of Dan Grant.
