This is the second novel by Neil White which is set in a fictional Yorkshire canal town, Highford, and which involves the characters Dan Grant, Solicitor and Jayne Brett, private investigator and I really enjoyed it.
The story starts with the terrifying murder of a young, abused woman, Lizzie Barnsley on New Year's Eve. Then, as with all of Neil's books I was quickly hooked and drawn into the tangled plot of the story. In my opinion his storytelling style is unique in that it is not only dark and topical, but he has the ability to introduce a character and then leave us wondering, who (and what) they might be for a while, before letting us know the answer!
As well as a being a terrific serial killer story, it also deals with the growing intimate relationship between Dan and Jayne. Will they or won't they! you'll have to wait until the very last page to find out.
If you haven't read any of Neil's other books I can recommend them without reservation. Be it Jack and Laura, Sheldon, or my favourites the Parker family, It's always disappointing to see his main characters move on, but he never fails to please with his new ones, when the time comes.
