I enjoyed this book immensely. It was a little slow to start but the author skilfully draws you into the narrative and the book then cracks along at a fair pace to a thrilling climax.

The main characters Dan Grant and Jayne Brett are entirely believable as is the plot.

Set in a northern town hugging the Pennines, the Darkness Around Her concerns a young girl, Lizzie Barnsley who is murdered on a canal towpath after an argument with her violent boyfriend. A man, Peter Box, is arrested for her murder and there is evidence against him.

Dan Grant is a criminal lawyer assigned to defend Box. Grant alongside his investigator, Jane Brett, uncover a series of deaths along the canals. These deaths include that of Rosie Smith, a young teenage girl, whose stepfather, Sean Martin was sentenced for her murder but subsequently acquitted. When Dan finds out that Peter Box confessed to being involved in that murder too but his claim was dismissed, he realises that something doesnt seem right. With his client Peter Box refusing to say what happened, both Grant and Brett are in a race against time to uncover the truth.
