Name five people living or dead that you would like to have dinner with. Now, what would you do if your fantasy dinner party actually happened?

The Dinner List follows the story of Sabrina, who upon arriving at her thirtieth birthday dinner discovers four unexpected guests have joined the party - her late father, her former college professor, her ex-boyfriend and silver screen star Audrey Hepburn.

The story switches by chapter between the dinner party in the present and Sabrina's life over the last ten years. We watch as Sabrina struggles with college, money, work, friendships and relationships.

The writing wasn't complicated but it was solid. The relationship in the book was very realistic and not over dramatised, which I loved. The twist in the middle of the book triggered a surprisingly emotional punch that I didn't see coming. The character dialogue was sharp and entertaining and I enjoyed watching the character relationships develop during the course of the dinner.

The book also delves into people's perceptions of fate and how that can influence the decisions they make. I found the way the author incorporated this so organically into the story to be very interesting and thought provoking.

Overall, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It was a witty, contemporary read that pulled at the heartstrings towards the end. I would suggest it even to those who wouldn't normally pick up this genre.
