I received an advance copy of this book and basically thought I was just going to read through it and write a simple description and review before it gets properly released, but I had no idea I was going to get so attached to this story. I read it in a day because I genuinely couldn’t put it down, and it had me in tears more times than I can count.

This story is about Sabrina, a thirty-year-old editor, who attends her own birthday meal with her best friend, only to find that the other guests are people from her ‘if you could invite anyone, dead or alive, to a dinner party, who would it be?’ list. Her list includes her father who died many years earlier, a college professor, her best friend, her ex-boyfriend and Audrey Hepburn. When I first started reading this, I did make assumptions that it would be overly cringe-worthy, just because I felt that Audrey Hepburn is such a cliched character to have, but even she was strongly developed throughout the story to the point that I considered her more of a character in the novel than a celebrity in real life. The growth of Sabrina’s relationship with Audrey, as well as with every single one of the other guests, was beautifully developed.

The chapters alternate between the dinner party and the progression of Sabrina’s relationship with her ex-boyfriend Tobias and, again, I had my doubts that this would keep me hooked. By halfway through the novel though, I was racing through each chapter to get to what happens next, in both of the stories.

What personally resonated the most with me about this book was how incredibly Rebecca Serle presents the intricacies of relationships, and the fact that she does not shy away from analysing true love, including infatuation and all of its flaws. All of the characters just seemed so easy to identify with and real issues that you can identify in yourself or in friends or family are described so well that I believe it would be difficult for anyone to not relate to this book in at least one way.

I will definitely be reading the author’s other works and would 100% recommend this book if you want to read something romantic, relatable and heartbreakingly compelling.
