I confess that on looking at the cover of this book (all bright colours, golden type, hearts and a subtle Audrey Hepburn sitting on the "D") I assumed that this would be a light hearted rom-com.
It isn't.
The premise of the tale is familiar enough - who would you invite, living or dead, to your perfect dinner party?
It's a question we've all been asked but when it comes true on Sabrina's 30th birthday she finds herself in a restaurant with a mixed group of the dead and alive. Audrey Hepburn being the only famous person, the others being important players in Sabrina's life. The much admired college professor, the father who abandoned her, the love of her life and her best friend Jessica.
The focus is mainly on her romantic relationship with Tobias when they have the chance to reflect on their past and how it affected everyone else around them.
It's a well thought out tale with moments of pure joy being interspersed with deep reflection and regrets.
At 273 pages it's relatively short and there may have been room to expend the book and it's characters a little as I didn't feel I really got under the skin of any of them. If you're looking for a fairly light read with some poignant moments it's ideal.
