A sad opening

I usually don't like books told from a child's perspective, and I find often that they are overly simplified and hard to pay attention too.
However in this case I found the child perspective and confusion with the world profoundly sad, and whilst it's not the sort of thing I'd read I have to say I think the writer has got the tone of the opening and the dialogue of the kid just right.

I'm sure people will enjoy this story, it's just not my cup of tea.
