The Distance Between Me and the Cherry Tree is a novel for young adults and, despite the fact that I am well past the age-group for which the story is intended, I enjoyed this book very much indeed.

This is the story of a young girl, Mafalda, who is aged nine at the beginning of the book. She discovers that she has an incurable, rare eye condition which will result in her losing her sight within a matter of months. This story chronicles her thoughts and actions during that time.

This is a well-written book, which depicts Mafalda as both childlike and mature in her outlook. It ought to have left me feeling miserable and sad, but it had quite the opposite effect and left me feeling hopeful for Mafalda's future.

As an ophthalmic nurse in the past, I found this story very interesting and would wholeheartedly recommend it. And I thought that the clever cover was lovely too.
