This was a beautiful book, and appropriate for any age as it spreads a message of not giving up in the face of adversity.

The books tells the story of a ten year old girl named Mafalda who is loosing her sight. The follows the chronological decline of her eyesight but is structured in a way that measures this decline in the distance between her and a cherry tree in her school yard.

Along this journey, we share in Mafalda's frustrations when things that were a part of her everyday become more difficult, and the ways in which she overcomes this through friendships she builds (namely with her school janitor Estella and a classmate).

It is written from Malada's perspective and so the journey feels very personal, and despite it being a believable account from the viewpoint of a ten year old, the interactions she has and the message behind these I so etching useful and pertinent to readers of all ages.

This is a beautiful translation from the original Italian, there is a nuance to the writing that can sometimes be lost in a clunky translation.

A lovely quick read, one to be recommended to young and old.
