The author of this story, Paola Peretti, is affected by Stargardt disease- a rare genetic illness which causes progressive vision loss.
Paola has written this book about Mafalda, a 10 year old girl, who also suffers from Stargardt disease. Mafalda is measuring the progression of her disease by working out how close she needs to stand to the cherry tree in her school playground in order to see it. The distance gets less as time goes by.
The thoughts of this innocent young girl whose life is now restricted to her cat, her parents, her Romanian school caretaker, Estella, and a school friend, Filippo, are naively funny and very poignant.
This book is written for Young Adults but is thought provoking for every reader.
