I'm not normally a fan of historical fiction but this book has been featured so much on social media and in the press that I couldn't wait to read the first impression and see what all the fuss was about.
Unfortunately, the extract was somewhat spoiled by the synopsis as, despite the author's attempts to create intrigue, we already know that Fleetwood has found a letter explaining that she won't survive another pregnancy.
That being said, I did like the voice in which the extract was written. It felt very fitting for the era in which the book is set. We are also left with the million dollar question: Will Fleetwood and Alice survive or will they meet an untimely death?
I can't finish my first impression without praising the exquisite cover. I take my hat off to the design team for creating such a stunning book.
