I first of all was drawn to the cover of the book which was like an impressionist painting. I warmed to the main character Fleetwood and empathised with her situation - the difficulties in being an upperclass young woman of the time expecting to produce an heir. I am familiar with the stories of the Pendleton witches and am interested to see how the story pans out. The language in the first few pages I read is very descriptive and evocative and I was impatient to continue with the story.
