Set in Lancashire in the 1600's and the era of the Pendle witches, this amazing novel is based on both fact and fiction on the occupants of Gawthorpe Hall and their anguish of having an heir.
Fleetwood Shuttleworth, being only 17 and having 3 miscarriages already is with child again, but after discovering a letter hidden from a doctor, the anguish of being able to carry to full term is not without its torment. However, Fleetwood encounters a mysterious girl who could help, but this comes at a cost. How far are they both willing to go and what fates lie ahead?

Stacey Hall really has done her homework. Not only is this just a tale of 2 women but a beautifully portrayed and engrossing read of what life was like in that era and the formalities and horrors that applied.

I enjoyed every moment of this book and I really didn't want this book to end. Looking forward to reading more from Stacey in the near future.
