I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I started this book but I was blown away with what I found. Stacey Halls has created a magical story that highlights the struggles of being a women in the 17th century whilst writing a beautiful story about friendship, love and loyalty.

I really enjoyed how Fleetwood’s character developed over the course of the book, I think that this helped to add depth to the story and made me like her much more. Learning about Fleetwood’s story was absolutely heartbreaking but I think that in the end she got her happily ever after (even if it sounds like my nightmare 😂).

Personally I would have liked to see a little more of Alice but I did enjoy discovering more about her character. I thought that she would have had a bigger role in the book but I did like how the author kept a level of mystery surrounding her which meant that I was always on the edge of my seat.

I can’t put into words how much I hated some of the characters in this book, mainly for how they treated Fleetwood and Alice.

I think that the plot was well paced for the most part however towards the end I do think that the story felt rushed and could have done with a few more chapters just to tie up the ending a little better. Once I finished the book I felt like I was missing about 100 pages and like I had just been left hanging.

I really enjoyed the twist at the end, I didn’t see that coming at all and thought it was a stroke of genius from Stacey.

Generally speaking I don’t read lots of historical fiction but I am trying to branch out more and I am so glad that I decided to give this book a go! I definitely recommend that you pick this book up, it had me engrossed from the first chapter and I never wanted to put it down.

I already have The Foundling and can’t wait to read it!
