The Familiars is a perfect autumnal read - admittedly, despite being set in the summer 😂. Just look at the cover and the blurb, and tell me that it doesn't just scream autumn at you.

Part one didn't really do it for me, but this book came highly and repeatedly recommended to me so I stuck with it and I am so glad that I did. From part two and onwards, I was absolutely hooked. The writing in this book is quite beautiful and atmospheric, yet easy to read and enjoy.

I feel like this book could have benefitted from making Alice more initially likeable rather than mysterious and odd, to have got me that bit more invested. That said, she definitely did grow on me and I was very much rooting for her by the end. I loved her friendship with Fleetwood and how despite the two young women having such different backgrounds, they came together to be such a support for one another.

The Familiars is a fantastic debut and I have already added the rest of Stacey Halls' books to my wishlist.
