This book was easily my favourite of 2019!

Ever since I can remember, I have been fascinated by the Pendle Witch Trials. I grew up nearby and as a kid I loved the idea that magic could be real; I always wanted a familiar of my own! Of course back then I didn't know that these were real events, and real people being accused and persecuted of witchcraft.

For me, this book is pitched just perfectly. I adored Fleetwood, she was strong-willed and determined and caring, all at once. I was enthralled by her friendship with Alice, and her fight against ignorance and superstition. And I simply loved the gothic atmosphere, the setting, the mystery... it was all sewn together so beautifully.

I studied at Lancaster University, and while there I went on the tour of Lancaster Castle, so I have visited the prison cells, and seen the conditions those accused would have been locked away in. It's grim, let me tell you... then years later this book comes out that allows these women to have a voice, to let their story be heard. I adore that the characters are all based on real people, I love that it is not only about the witch trials themselves but also about the impact they had on the lives of others.

Bravo Stacey Halls for a fantastic debut, and I simply can't wait for more of your stories. I am so looking forward to The Foundling next month!

5 stars and more for this wonderful book!
