Set in England in 17th century the book follows story of Fleetwood Shuttleworth, seventeen year old wife of a rich master who already lost 3 babies in pregnancies . She is expecting again when she discovers her doctor wrote to her husband saying that another pregnancy will kill her. Fleetwood befriends a young midwife Alice who promises to help her with the pregnancy. But it wasn't good times to be a woman and a wise woman for that as everyone seen using herbs or remedies was accused of witchcraft. The two women are bound together to save each others lives and survive in this male dominated times. The book is centred in Lancashire and Yorkshire and historic folklore of Pendle witches. It's a really good read and hard to put down .
