The Familiars is set in 1612 Lancashire and follows 17 year old Fleetwood Shuttleworth who is pregnant for the fourth time, having lost the previous three prior to or during childbirth. She is swept up into the witch hysteria of Pendle Hill and is tasked with saving the life of her midwife and friend, Alice Grey who is accused of witchcraft.

I absolutely adored this book. It was gripping, suspenseful and the atmosphere was chilling. The setting was brilliant, and I appreciate the fact that the characters are mostly based off real people, as it spins a fictional tale to fill in the blanks and explain what little we know.

I adore the strong female lead, who challenged societal expectations of the time and wasn’t afraid to break rules. The friendship that blossomed in the book was beautiful and believable and I loved reading the interactions between the two friends. I felt so connected to the characters that I felt every blow to my core.

The ending was brilliant in my opinion, as it brought closure to what needed it, yet only hinted at others. I liked how not everything was explained as it keeps the intrigue even after you close the book. This was the easiest 5 stars I’ve given for a while, and I can’t wait to pick up The Foundling.
