The story is centred on the friendship between the protagonist, a rich young wife ,Fleetwood, and Alice, a poor young woman who is later accused of witchcraft. It looks at poverty , social injustice and the disparity of power between the sexes ( through the relationship's between Fleetwood, her husband and his powerful controlling friend).
This book is easy to read and has wonderful, detailed descriptions of Gawthorpe Hall Padiham where the story is set and the natural life of the surrounding countryside.
