The Familiars is a story of women and the injustices they faced in history. It’s 1612 and the King is at war with witchcraft leading to a group of local women being accused. One of those women is Alice, and seventeen year old Fleetwood is determined to save her.
Fleetwood is our main protagonist in this story and what an empathetic character she is. She has had three failed pregnancies already and so when she meets Alice, a midwife, she feels like she finally has found someone who can help her carry this child to term. What follows is a story of betrayal, loyalty and friendship which tugs on the heartstrings.
I really enjoyed this book and thought the author did well to portray the oppressive atmosphere women must have felt during this time. The characters were well written and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
