Admittedly, I bought this book primarily because the hardback is stunning and it is one of my favourite genres, historical fiction. I was further intrigued to learn the book is set in 17th century Lancaster (Lancashire as it is known now), which is the area where I currently live. The Pendle witches are legend around here and now I am inspired to visit Gawthorpe Hall, which to my astonishment is a real place. In fact most of the characters in this book were real people from history. Fascinating. The writing was very evocative and I breezed through the pages, wondering what was going to happen next and gasping at a few revelations. I liked the ending, I thought it was satisfying and overall this book inspired further research. Beautiful book, intriguing story.
