I had been meaning to read this book for a while, and I’m so pleased I did. I absolutely loved this novel.

Set in the story of the Pendle Witches, The Familiars fills in some of the blanks of this tale as it tells the story of the one surviving girl accused of being a witch at this trial, through the eyes of Fleetwood, a noblewoman who has struggled to have a child.

Fleetwood is a wonderful character and as a reader you can really feel what she goes through in this book. I loved the commentary about attitudes towards women in this period, and how easy it was to accuse someone of witchcraft. It highlights how women were viewed in the seventeenth century, and how people were afraid of the unknown.

I really love the way Stacey Halls writes and am very excited to see what comes next.
