I didn’t mean to read a book about witch trials in the lead up to Halloween, but this did end up being a very seasonal read. I’m not usually a historical fiction reader either but I have been trying to dip my toes into it recently. Annoyingly, i’m a little bit disappointed by my initial experience with it.

The first half of this book left me a little bored, missing something that I can’t quite put my finger on. It did improve though and i’m glad I stuck it out because I thoroughly enjoyed the second half and especially the final 100 pages or so, but I don’t know if it was enough to make the first half worth it.

I also found myself pretty confused about who everyone was. Maybe this was because I was reading it too slow? But the names of all the people caught up in the accusations and witchy goings on was a bit lost on me and I stopped flicking back to try and remember the backstory and just persevered in the hope i’d figure it out. Sometimes I did, sometimes I just ignored the confusion.

I know a lot of people absolutely love this book and will be APPALLED at my less than impressed review. While I absolutely didn’t dislike it, i’m a bit sad to say I didn’t love it either. I did love that it is based on a real part of history though and a lot of the characters were real people! There is a couple of pages at the end that explains the inspiration and it is fascinating.
