The novel is set in 1612 in Lancashire in the middle of “witch hunt” and ends with trial of Pendle witches. The pretty cover and mention of witchcraft was definitely something that first attracted me to this book.

At the beginning we meet Fleetwood, 17 years old girl who’s desperate to have a living child as she’s miscarried 3 times before and her mother and husband are getting a bit impatient. That already sounded like an interesting story to me.

Then Fleetwood meets young midwife called Alice Gray. She seems to know how to do her job very well even though her medical practices are a bit unconventional.
Alice is doing all she can to help Fleetwood to have a successful pregnancy and childbirth.

Suddenly she gets accused of a witchcraft and now it’s patient’s turn to help.

I really loved this story of friendship and loyalty. Two young women fighting agains men’s prejudices and accusations. It’s was very brave in times when wife was treated as a furniture and wise women were supposed to be burned.

Even though the book is 400 pages long it still felt as it’s too short. I needed more and more of this beautiful story.
