I was very lucky to have received a proof copy of this wonderful story and have purchased copies for friends when the novel itself is published in February 2019.
The Familiars by Stacey Halls presents a wonderful protagonist in Fleetwood Shuttleworth and the individuals she supports, wonders about, and rallies against.
I have a fair knowledge of the period and the trials. Stacey has gone to great lengths to bring this moment in history alive, with a brilliantly crafted, unique story. Places I have visited are visualised in a truly skilled manner. I have to applaud the way Stacey is so very good to the reader. I could see the tension, hear the sounds in every scene, feel the eerie moments, smell the despair, taste the well-researched food and drink, and absorb the turmoil within the story.
I admire the unique voices which are engaging. Every word spoken is purposeful, as are the silences, and the raising of an eye. I was kept wondering what is going to happen next, and what I imagined would happen was turned on its head. That to me is the mark of a great novel, and there were many such moments.
Above all the bond that develops between Fleetwood and Alice Gray is a compelling one weaved into the witch trials and the inspired title of the novel. The Familiars has a truly unexpected ending which left the hairs on the back of my neck raised and I shan’t say if that was in delight or fear.
The title of the novel is perfect as you will see when you absorb the story.
Today my copy of the novel arrived with its stunning artwork. I look forward to rereading this captivating tale.
