Fleetwood Shuttleworth is a 17 year old wife living at Gawthorpe Hall, Lancaster. She is pregnant for the fourth time, having never successfully carried a living child to full term thus far. Fleetwood reads a letter written by a doctor to her husband indicating that another pregnancy would surely be the death of his wife - she is left reeling from this news, and is shocked and hurt that her husband would keep such a thing from her.
On one of her journeys through the local woods, Fleetwood meets a local named Alice Gray, who is a midwife. Fleetwood asks for her help to survive the pregnancy and produce a living heir.
Alice becomes embroiled in witchcraft allegations, and Fleetwood makes it her mission to clear Alice's name...
I really enjoyed this book; and I like the fact that it is based on real characters and events from history, even if the actual story is a work of fiction. The author writes well, and the text flows along nicely. The cover artwork is beautiful and eye-catching.
