Great book for a history buff. Really captured the fever around the seventeenth century witch hunts.
I love the way the author manages to get in a touch of doubt around whether or not the witches in the book and accusations of witchcraft are completely made up. Stacey Halls manages to keep you in suspense the whole way through.
The development of the relationship between Fleetwood and Alice is the highlight of the book. Two women from very different backgrounds who give each other strength in a world governed by men. How Fleetwood develops from a sickly self-conscious girl to a woman who learns to stand up for herself is inspirational.
My only criticism would be that if it wasn’t for the witchcraft element then it would be hard to tell that this book is set in 1612. Having said that the writing style makes it an easy and enjoyable read for everyone.
