Fleetwood Shuttleworth is 17, married to Richard and expecting a baby. Fleetwood has had miscarriages before and really wants this baby to live. She meets a young girl, Alice Gray whoom she befriends and employs as her midwife. However this is Pendle in 1612 and women who dabble with herbs have to be cateful they are not accused of being a witch.

I read this book because I enjoy stories about witches and especially the Pendle witches. Fleetwood her husband Richard, Alice and many other characters are real. I always like to read about people from history even if its in fiction.

I liked the book but was expecting more about the witches. This story for me was more about Fleetwood and her life with Richard. I found Fleetwood quite likeable and in this story quite fiesty for its time. However as its a work of fiction the author states there is nothing in history that connects Fleetwood and Alice.

I did feel at times the story was a little flat. I was expecting more and for me the story wasn't very exciting. At times I also felt the storyline and some of the actions that Fleetwood took a little unrealistic being that she is carrying a baby and has had miscarriages.

I wanted more about the witches and was disappointed with this book because of that. However the book wasn't bad and there was large chunks I did enjoy.
