Historical fiction is not a genre I read very often but needed to read this for an online reading group I was hosting. I am so glad that I did. The narrators voice was great to listen to and I could definitely listen to her reading another book. I don't know a lot about the time that the story is set. Embarrassingly I know more about the Salem witch trials in the States than I do about our own. I did get confused at times trying to keep up with all of the characters but luckily I had a paperback copy by my side to read back any passages to get it straight in my head. I liked Fleetwood a lot and thought she was a very strong female character considering the time that she lived in. I gained more sympathy for her mother while reading a little further in the book although I hated her at the beginning. I thought that Fleetwood was definitely too good for Richard and I half expected him to strike her whenever he got angry. Roger was a horrible character whom I liked at the beginning until the reader could see how ambition had totally blinded him to any morals or empathy. I will definitely sign up to the authors newsletter to learn more about the witch trials.
