Although 'The Familiars' is a work of fiction, a lot of the characters, places and events were historically accurate. I learnt a lot about the Pendle witch trials... something I'd never even heard of before! Stacey Halls must have conducted a huge amount of research to write the book, but it never once felt like a history lesson. Part of me would have liked to delve more into the trial itself, but I understand it would have made the book twice as long! ⠀

Fleetwood exudes girl power! Over the course of the book she grows in confidence and I love that she eventually has the courage to stand up and fight for what she believes in. In many ways, Alice was very similar, she just lacked the social status to get her voice heard. ⠀

In short, I loved it! The storyline... the descriptions... the characters. This is an impressive debut, and I would love to see this made into a mini tv series! I have Stacey's second book 'The Foundling' on my Kindle, so I'm looking forward to reading that later on in the year. If you enjoy books by Jessie Burton, I think you'll love this one.
